Coline Serreau’s film tells with sophisticated French humor the story of Milla (played by Coline Serreau herself) from the Green Planet, who arrives on Earth with the mission of helping the confused and backward earthlings. The inhabitants of the Green Planet, where she comes from, live in a post-capitalist society in which money and markets are long forgotten and unnecessary, there is no hierarchy, decisions are made in general assemblies on the principles of direct democracy, there is no corporate division of labor. War, GMOs and ecological destruction, alienation, exploitation and profiteering have long given way to an understanding of oneness with nature, justice, solidarity and self-governance. The 1996 film hilariously poses fundamental questions that are even more relevant today in the face of ecological destruction and total crisis in which we live.
